US steel imports up 12.2 percent in April

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US monthly steel imports in April 2018 increased 12.2 percent from March (census data) to total 3,391,368 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows an 11.6 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel imports in April totaled $3.09 billion, compared to $2.79 billion in March and $2.50 billion in April 2017.

Top sources for US steel imports in April include: Canada, with 637,465 mt; Korea, with 428,192 mt; Russia, with 423,449 mt; Brazil, with 360,307 mt; and Mexico, with 347,134 mt.

Major steel products imported in April include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 782,004 mt; HDG sheets and strip, at 317,441 mt; OCTG, at 296,871 mt; line pipe, at 251,594 mt; HRC, at 235,633 mt; and CRC, at 198,493 mt.
