US steel imports drop 9.6 percent in September

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US monthly steel imports in September 2017 decreased 9.6 percent from August (census data) to total 2,767,477 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 9.9 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel imports in September totaled $2.42 billion, compared to $2.54 billion in August and $1.87 billion in September 2016.

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the finished steel import market share was an estimated 27 percent in September and is estimated at 28 percent YTD.

Top sources for US steel imports in September include: Canada, with 435,283 mt; Brazil, with 322,715 mt; Mexico, with 294,714 mt; Korea, with 292,827 mt; and Russia, with 233,369 mt.

Major steel products imported in September include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 542,302 mt; OCTG, at 296,975 mt; line pipe, at 250,717 mt; HDG sheets and strip, at 241,112 mt; CRC, at 179,316 mt; and HRC, at 154,865 mt.
