US steel imports drop 15.3 percent in June

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US monthly steel imports in June 2018 decreased 15.3 percent from May (census data) to total 2,249,947 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 36.8 percent decrease. In terms of value, US steel imports in June totaled $2.18 billion, compared to $2.71 billion in May and $2.89 billion in June 2017.

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the US steel import market share in June is estimated at 22 percent; year-to-date import market share is estimated at 25 percent.

Top sources for US steel imports in June include: Canada, with 390,860 mt; Brazil, with 253,101 mt; Russia, with 239,316 mt; Mexico, with 221,405 mt; and Korea, with 188,948 mt.

Major steel products imported in June include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 566,816 mt; HDG sheets and strip, at 247,016 mt; OCTG, at 179,409 mt; HRC, at 152,455 mt; line pipe, at 145,661 mt; and CRC, at 134,462 mt.
