US steel import permits up 8.6 percent in July

Based on the US Department of Commerce’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, steel import permit applications for the month of July totaled 2,904,907 mt. This was an 8.6 percent increase from the permits recorded in June and a 28.5 percent increase from the June census import total.

In July, steel products with the largest total import permits include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 740,891 mt; HDG, at 237,361 mt; OCTG, at 220,283 mt; HRC, at 216,385 mt; line pipe, at 193,939 mt; and CRC, at 166,920 mt.

The largest sources of steel import permit applications in July were Brazil (450,764 mt), Canada (420,048 mt), Mexico (386,259 mt), Korea (176,173 mt), and Japan (121,786 mt).
