US steel import permits up 8.3 percent in October

Based on the US Department of Commerce’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, steel import permit applications for the month of October totaled 2,690,518 mt. This was an 8.3 percent increase from the permits recorded in September and a 31.1 percent increase from the September census import total.

In October, steel products with the largest total import permits include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 804,951 mt; HDG, at 236,571 mt; HRC, at 212,302 mt; line pipe, at 198,772 mt; OCTG, at 154,457 mt; and CRC, at 131,210 mt.

The largest sources of steel import permit applications in October were Brazil (543,316 mt), Canada (408,296 mt), Mexico (304,633 mt), Korea (160,416 mt), and Russia (159,265 mt).
