US steel import permits down 7.3 percent in August

Based on the US Department of Commerce’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, steel import permit applications for the month of August totaled 2,692,091 mt. This was a 7.3 percent decrease from the permits recorded in July and a 0.7 percent decrease from the July census import total.

In August, steel products with the largest total import permits include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 860,439 mt; HDG, at 212,364 mt; OCTG, at 176,425 mt; HRC, at 158,609 mt; line pipe, at 143,534 mt; and wire rod, at 136,433 mt.

The largest sources of steel import permit applications in August were Brazil (577,096 mt), Canada (421,639 mt), Mexico (226,589 mt), Russia (206,663 mt), and Korea (151,276 mt).
