US steel exports up 4.9 percent in August

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in August 2019 increased 4.9 percent from July to total 590,431 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 0.6 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel exports in August totaled $855.3 million, compared to $812.8 million in July and $886.4 million in August 2018.

Steel exports to Canada in August increased 7.0 percent from the preceding month to 269,486 mt, and increased 5.3 percent from August 2018. Exports to Mexico increased 4.2 percent month-on-month to 269,086 mt, which is up 1.5 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in August include: Dominican Republic, with 4,397 mt; China, with 3,486 mt; India, with 3,285 mt; Spain, with 2,823 mt; and Korea, with 2,780 mt.

Major steel products exported in August include HDG, at 111,740 mt; cut-length plates, at 65,498 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 46,904 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 42,663 mt; and plates in coils, at 34,544 mt.
