US steel exports up 23.1 percent in January

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in January 2023 increased 23.1 percent from December to total 661,254 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 5.4 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel exports in January totaled $1.23 billion, compared to $1.04 billion in December and $1.15 million in January 2022.

Steel exports to Canada in January increased 30.9 percent to 318,336 mt, and increased 4.7 percent from January 2022. Exports to Mexico decreased 52.4 percent month-on-month to 301,199 mt, which is up 5.8 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in January include: Dominican Republic, with 2,901 mt; Brazil, with 2,797 mt; China, with 2,428 mt; United Kingdom, with 2,061 mt; and India, with 1,858 mt.

Major steel products exported in January include HDG, at 106,476 mt; cut-length plates, at 83,578 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 65,301 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 43,252 mt; and plates in coil, at 27,602 mt.
