US steel exports drop 3.1 percent in February

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in February 2018 decreased 3.1 percent from January to total 730,605 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 2.7 percent decrease. In terms of value, US steel exports in February totaled $1.02 billion, compared to $1.05 billion in January and $950.1 million in February 2017.

Steel exports to Canada in February decreased 8.7 percent from the preceding month to 355,827 mt, and decreased 0.5 percent from February 2017. Exports to Mexico increased by 5.7 percent month-on-month to 288,080 mt, which is down 7.2 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in February include: China, with 10,168 mt; Malta, with 5,266 mt; Morocco, with 4,615 mt; Dominican Republic, with 4,168 mt; and Finland, with 4,115 mt.

Major steel products exported in February include HDG, at 93,561 mt; cut-length plates, at 71,298 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 59,234 mt; heavy structural shapes, at 44,939 mt; and cold rolled sheets, at 44,739 mt.
