US steel exports drop 16.4 percent in 2018

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, annual steel exports in 2018 totaled 7,975,309 mt, down 16.4 percent compared to 2017. By value, US steel exports in 2018 totaled $11.6 billion, compared to $12.5 billion in 2017.

Steel exports to Canada in 2018 totaled 3,849,769 mt, down 17.7 percent from 2017. Steel exports to Mexico in 2018 totaled 3,211,012 mt, down 14.0 percent from 2017. Other major destinations for US steel exports in 2018 include China, with 82,618 mt; Italy, with 66,208 mt; India, with 61,826 mt; Belgium, with 39,583 mt; and Malta, with 37,636 mt.

Major steel products exported from the US in 2018 include HDG, at 1,209,111 mt; cut-length plate, at 860,269 mt; HRC, at 611,055 mt; CRC, at 526,092 mt; and beams, at 452,138 mt.
