US steel exports drop 15.9 percent for full-year 2019

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, steel exports for the full year 2019 totaled 6,702,626 mt, a decrease of 15.9 percent from the full year 2018. In terms of value, US steel exports in 2019 totaled $9.87 billion, compared to $11.62 billion in 2018.

Steel exports to Canada in 2019 decreased 23.6 percent from the preceding year to 2,942,603 mt. Exports to Mexico decreased 4.9 percent year-on-year to 3,051,718 mt in 2019.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in 2019 include: China, with 54,663 mt; India, with 54,018 mt; Dominican Republic, with 38,278 mt; Brazil, with 38,001 mt; and Korea, with 34,121 mt.

Major steel products exported in 2019 include HDG, at 1,225,144 mt; cut-length plates, at 773,976 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 543,241 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 474,162 mt; and plates in coils, at 356,741 mt.
