US steel exports drop 1.5 percent in September

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in September decreased 1.5 percent from August to total 819,541 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 13.6 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel exports in September totaled $1.04 billion, compared to $1.09 billion in August and $912.3 million in September 2016.

Steel exports to Canada in September decreased 4.3 percent from the preceding month to 388,448 mt, and increased 9.9 percent from September 2016. Exports to Mexico decreased by 1.4 percent month-on-month to 326,842 mt, which is up 10.9 percent from the same month a year ago. 

Other top destinations for US steel exports in September include: Turkey, with 33,334 mt; Italy, with 7,589 mt; China, with 6,747 mt; Belgium, with 4,827 mt; and Korea, with 4,484 mt.

Major steel products exported in September include HDG, at 111,918 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 96,738 mt; cut-length plates, at 86,870 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 52,458 mt; and heavy structural shapes, at 41,726 mt.
