US steel exports drop 1.4 percent in August

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in August 2018 decreased 1.4 percent from July to total 586,670 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 29.5 percent decrease. In terms of value, US steel exports in August totaled $886.4 million, compared to $876.6 million in July and $1.09 billion in August 2017.

Steel exports to Canada in August decreased 1.7 percent from the preceding month to 255,813 mt, and decreased 36.9 percent from August 2017. Exports to Mexico increased by 0.9 percent month-on-month to 265,023 mt, which is down 20.0 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in August include: China, with 4,975 mt; India, with 3,808 mt; Belgium, with 3,673 mt; Pakistan, with 3,644 mt; and Italy, with 3,373 mt.

Major steel products exported in August include HDG, at 102,649 mt; cut-length plates, at 68,101 mt; cold rolled sheets, at 47,921 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 42,882 mt; and hot rolled bars, at 32,479 mt.
