US steel exports down 11.1 percent in December

According to export data from the US Department of Commerce, monthly steel exports in December 2019 decreased 11.1 percent from November to total 485,094 mt. A year-on-year comparison shows a 3.0 percent increase. In terms of value, US steel exports in December totaled $678.7 million, compared to $763.4 million in November and $716.0 million in December 2018.

Steel exports to Canada in December decreased 18.9 percent from the preceding month to 203,898 mt, but increased 14.3 percent from December 2018. Exports to Mexico decreased 0.4 percent month-on-month to 229,813 mt, which is down 1.8 percent from the same month a year ago.

Other top destinations for US steel exports in December include: China, with 5,401 mt; Dominican Republic, with 3,140 mt; India, with 2,953 mt; United Kingdom, with 2,591 mt; and Brazil, with 2,552 mt.

Major steel products exported in December include HDG, at 90,722 mt; cut-length plates, at 54,981 mt; hot rolled sheets, at 53,040 mt; plates in coils, at 31,960 mt; and cold rolled sheets, at 31,809 mt.
