The Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA) released statistical data on imports, US consumption, and import penetration for year-to-date January 2012 on Monday. The data represents US consumption, imports, and import penetration for January 2012 compared to the same 2011 one month period.
The following data is presented by specialty steel product line, total stainless steel, and total specialty steel:
- Stainless steel sheet/strip: Imports in year-to-date January 2012 were 28,211 tons, a 21.7 percent decrease compared to year-to-date January 2011; US consumption was 139,555 tons, a 2 percent increase; one month import penetration was 20.2 percent, a 6.1 percentage point decrease from 2011
- Stainless steel plate: Imports in year-to-date January 2012 were 22,452 tons, a 56.2 percent increase compared to year-to-date January 2011; US. consumption was 42,064 tons, a 32.3vpercent increase; one month import penetration was 53.4percent, an 8.2 percentage point increase from 2011
- Stainless steel bar: Imports in year-to-date January 2012 were 13,486 tons, a 32.4 percent increase compared to year-to-date January 2011; US consumption was 23,577 tons, a 13.1 percent increase; one month import penetration was 57.2 percent, an 8.3 percentage point increase from 2011. Stainless steel rod: Imports in year-to-date January 2012 were 2,142 tons, a 14 percent decrease compared to year-to-date January 2011; US consumption was 5,117 tons, a 19.1 percent decrease; one month import penetration was 41.9 percent, a 2.5 percentage point increase from 2011
- Stainless steel wire: Imports in year-to-date January 2012 were 3,816 tons, a 1.4 percent decrease compared to year-to-date January 2011; US consumption was 5,172 tons, a 0.1 percent increase; one month import penetration was 73.8 percent, a 1.1 percentage point decrease from 2011
Imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) in year-to-date January 2012 were 70,107 tons, a 4.7 percent increase compared to year-to-date January 2011; US consumption was 215,484 tons, a 7.2 percent increase; one month import penetration was 32.5 percent, a 0.8 percentage point decrease from 2011.
- Alloy tool steel: Imports in year-to-date January 2012 were 13,772 tons, a 19 percent increase compared to year-to-date January 2011; US consumption and import penetration were not calculable
- Electrical steel: Imports in year-to-date January 2012 were 10,429 tons, an 8.4 percent decrease compared to year-to-date January 2011; US. Consumption was 27,962 tons, a 34.6 percent increase from year-to-date January 2011; one month import penetration was 37.3 percent, a 17.5 percentage point decrease from 2011
Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) in year-to-date January 2012 were 94,308 tons, a 4.9 percent increase compared to year-to-date January 2011; US consumption was 252,181 tons, a 9.6 percent increase; one month import penetration was 37.4 percent, a 1.7 percentage point decrease from 2011.
