US rig count down 8.5%, year-over-year

According to the most recent data from Baker Hughes, the U.S. rotary rig count declined by 4, to 963, for the week of July 5, 2019. The current total rig count is down by 89 rigs (8.5%) year-over-year.

The number of rotary rigs drilling for oil is down 5 to 788. There are 75 fewer rigs targeting oil than last year. Rigs drilling for oil are 81.8 percent of all drilling activity.  

Rigs targeting natural gas were up 1 at 174. The number of rigs drilling for gas is 13 lower than last year. Year-over-year oil exploration in the U.S. is down 8.7 percent. Gas exploration is down 7.0 percent.
