US rebar imports up 59.7 percent in May

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of rebar totaled 135,032 mt in May 2019, up 59.7 percent from April but down 9.6 percent from May 2018 levels. By value, rebar imports totaled $68.8 million in May 2019, compared to $43.5 million in the previous month and $93.9 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most rebar from Spain in May, with 39,021 mt, compared to zero tonnage in April and 11,159 mt in May 2018. Other top sources of imported rebar in May include Italy, with 19,980 mt; Turkey, with 18,772 mt; Algeria, with 14,485 mt; and Bulgaria, with 10,259 mt.
