US rebar imports down 5.2 percent in August

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of rebar totaled 80,057 mt in August 2019, down 5.2 percent from July and down 39.1 percent from August 2018 levels. By value, rebar imports totaled $40.2 million in August 2019, compared to $44.4 million in the previous month and $74.2 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most rebar from Spain in August, with 31,102 mt, compared to 17,004 mt in July and 4,469 mt in August 2018. Other top sources of imported rebar in August include Oman, with 20,266 mt; South Africa, with 10,528 mt; Mexico, with 7,817 mt; and Italy, with 2,995 mt.
