According to the latest data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), for the week ending December 21, 2019, US domestic raw steel production was recorded at 1,866,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 80.7 percent. Production was 1,861,000 net tons in the week ending December 21, 2018 while the capability utilization then was 79.4 percent. The current week production represents a 0.3 percent increase from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending December 21, 2019 is up 1.2 percent from the previous week ending December 14, 2019 when production was 1,844,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 79.7 percent.
Adjusted year-to-date production through December 21, 2019 was 94,450,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 80.1 percent. That is up 1.8 percent from the 92,777,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 78.2 percent.
Broken down by districts, the production for the week ending December 21, 2019 in thousands of net tons is as follows: North East: 207; Great Lakes: 681; Midwest: 194; Southern: 695 and Western: 89 for a total of 1866.
