US plates in coil imports up 23.4 percent in January

According to delayed final census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of plates in coil totaled 112,400 mt in January 2019, up 23.4 percent from December and up 11.4 percent from January 2018 levels. By value, plates in coil imports totaled $86.8 million in January 2019, compared to $71.9 million in the previous month and $67.4 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most plates in coil from Canada in January, with 61,634 mt, compared to 47,478 mt in December and 65,889 mt in January 2018. Other top sources of imported plates in coil in January include Germany, with 13,628 mt; Mexico, with 10,799 mt; Korea, with 9,906 mt; Japan, with 4,513 mt; and Turkey, with 2,885 mt.
