US plates in coil imports down 13.8 percent in May

According to final census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of plates in coil totaled 89,105 mt in May 2019, down 13.8 percent from April and down 38.4 percent from May 2018 levels. By value, plates in coil imports totaled $63.4 million in May 2019, compared to $75.3 million in the previous month and $116.4 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most plates in coil from Canada in May, with 41,568 mt, compared to 44,170 mt in April and 90,009 mt in May 2018. Other top sources of imported plates in coil in May include Germany, with 13,279 mt; Korea, with 7,693 mt; Netherlands, with 7,504 mt; and Sweden, with 5,025 mt.
