US plates in coil imports down 10.8 percent in January

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of plates in coil totaled 76,775 mt in January 2020, down 10.8 percent from December and down 31.7 percent from January 2019 levels. By value, plates in coil imports totaled $44.2 million in January 2020, compared to $50.0 million in the previous month and $86.8 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most plates in coil from Canada in January, with 69,556 mt, compared to 59,845 mt in December and 61,634 mt in January 2019. Other top sources of imported plates in coil in January include Mexico, with 1,875 mt; Netherlands, with 1,627 mt; and Dominican Republic, with 1,400 mt.
