US metallurgical coal exports up 26.7 percent in H1 2017

US metallurgical or coking coal exports were 23.24 million mt in H1 2017, up 26.7 percent from 18.34 million mt in the same period last year. In Q1 2017, 11.08 million mt increased by 20 percent from 9.24 million mt in the same quarter 2016.

In June 2017, US metallurgical coal exports were 3.88 million mt, up 24.9 percent compared to June 2016. The top export destinations for the material in June 2017 were Japan, Canada and Brazil (498,967 mt to Japan, 429,073 mt to Canada, and 372,321 mt to Brazil). While US metallurgical exports in June 2017 compared to June 2016 declined by about 31.8 percent to Brazil from 545,923 mt, exports to Japan increased by 103 percent from 245,329 mt while exports to Canada increased by 105 percent from 209,293 mt.
