On Friday, June 15, Donald Trump moved forward with the 25 percent tariff on up to $50 billion of goods from China that will take effect July 6. The goods are identified as “industrially significant technologies” imported from China.

A list published by the White House details more than 1,000 specific products that will be affected by the tariffs. Components used in electronics manufacturing including touchscreens, batteries, electric motors, televisions, cameras, radio receivers, and fiber optic cables are included. According to the White House, the tariffs are targeted at China’s “Made in China 2025” initiative which focuses on promoting high-tech manufacturing in China that obtained US intellectual property and technology “through unfair economic practices.”

China previously threatened to retaliate against such tariffs in the same measure at $50 billion and it recently announced tariffs “of the same scale and the same strength.” The White House statement also pledged to implement additional tariffs in China retaliated.
