US HDG imports down 4.9 percent in August

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip totaled 278,648 mt in August 2017, down 4.9 percent from July but up 19.5 percent from August 2016 levels. By value, HDG imports totaled $249.6 million in August 2017, compared to $263.4 million in the previous month and $182.4 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most HDG from Canada in August, with 79,803 mt, compared to 73,431 mt in July and 87,776 mt in August 2016. Other top sources of imported HDG in August include Turkey, with 38,077 mt; Brazil, with 26,633 mt; Russia, with 15,704 mt; Taiwan, with 15,174 mt; and Korea, with 14,266 mt.
