US exports of met coal up 40.9 percent year-on-year in January

US met coal (coking coal) exports for January totaled 3.9 million mt, down approximately 7 percent from December’s 4.2 million mt, but up 40.9 percent year-on-year from 2.77 million mt, according to the US Energy Information Administration. US met coal exports of 4.2 million mt in December 2016 were up 20.7 percent from November and up 47.9 percent from December 2015. For 2016, US met coal exports totaled 37.1 million mt, down 11 percent from 2015.

In 2016, the largest importers of US met coal were Brazil at 6.2 million mt, Netherlands at 3.7 million mt, and Japan at 3.6 million mt.

In 2015, Brazil imported 5.6 million mt of met coal from the US, the Netherlands 4.1 million mt, and Japan 3.2 million mt.
