As reported this week by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), during the week ended January 12, 2008, raw steel production in the US increased by 1.1 percent from the previous week to 2,050 million net tons (nt).
The previous week's numbers showed 2.027 million nt of raw steel produced by the US. Steel production for the week ended January 12, 2008 was up 9.2 percent from the 1.877 million net tons produced the same week of last year.
The Southern district produced the most raw steel for the week ended January 12, 2008, with 599,000 nt, closely followed by the Indiana/Chicago district with a total of 503,000 nt.
Year-to-date net tonnage as of January 12, 2008 registered at 4.077 million nt with mills working at an average capability utilization rate of 85.4 percent. This compares to YTD net tonnage of 3.754 million nt on January 12, 2007 with an average capability utilization rate of 78.2 percent.
