According to news reports Monday, the US Chamber of Commerce is mounting a campaign against the Trump administration's tariffs, including the Section 232 on imported steel and aluminum.
The business lobby started the campaign after China, Canada, Mexico and the European Union imposed retaliatory tariffs on an estimated $75 billion worth of US exports a week; the campaign began before the implementation late last week of additional tariffs against China, which are expected to result in further retaliatory tariffs on US export goods.
“Tariffs are beginning to take a toll on American businesses, workers, farmers, and consumers as overseas markets close to American-made products and prices increase here at home,” US Chamber President and CEO Thomas Donohue said in a statement. “Tariffs are simply taxes that raise prices for everyone. Tariffs that beget tariffs that beget more tariffs only lead to a trade war that will cost American jobs and economic growth.”
The Chamber has warned consumers that a trade war could make items like coffee, condiments and toilet paper more expensive. The business lobby has launched a website, www.thewrongapproach.com to deal the economic impact on each US state.
