Venezuela's largest steelmaker Ternium Sidor has been shut down as of Wednesday due to a 48-hour strike, according to a representative of the steelworkers' union SUTISS.

The union stopped work at 11 p.m. on Wednesday with threats to extend the strike indefinitely if management failed to meet demands during the 48-hour stoppage.

Employees of Argentine-controlled Ternium Sidor are fighting for a salary increase, reduced outsourcing and social benefits, the union has said.

Ternium Sidor, Venezuela's only manufacturer of flat rolled steel products, produces 4.8 million metric tons of liquid steel annually.
