Ukrainian steelmakers issue January-October output data

The major Ukrainian steelmakers have released their preliminary production results for the first ten months of 2009.

Accordingly, during the given period Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich) reduced its finished steel product output by 35.8 percent and its pipe production by 63.7 percent year on year, to about 2.5 million mt and 32,600 mt respectively. Ilyich's crude steel production decreased by 32.2 percent, its pig iron output by 28.6 percent and its agglomerate production by 38.5 percent, year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 3.457 million, 2.91 million and 6.457 million.

During the first ten months of 2009, Azovstal decreased its crude steel output by 26.8 percent to 3.72 million mt, its pig iron production by 24.2 percent to 3.21 million mt and its finished steel production by 26.1 percent to 3.43 million mt, all compared to the corresponding period of 2008. Meanwhile, Azovstal's metallurgical coke output registered a drop of 17 percent to about 1.66 million mt year on year.

In January-October 2009, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih produced 3.643 million mt of finished steel - down 24.3 percent, 4.02 million mt of crude steel - down 30.1 percent, 3.53 million mt of pig iron - down 32.1 percent, and 6.327 million mt of agglomerate - down 27.5 percent, all compared to the first ten months of 2008.

During the period in question, Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) reduced its pig iron production by 18.7 percent year on year, its crude steel production by 21.4 percent, its finished steel production by 19.9 percent, and its agglomerate production by about 0.5 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 2.78 million, 3.1 million, 2.85 million and 3.8 million.

During the first ten months of this year, Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (EMZ) decreased its pig iron production by 23 percent to 1.735 million mt, its crude steel production by 18.2 percent to 1.962 million mt, its finished steel output by 22.3 percent to 1.856 million mt, and its agglomerate production by six percent to 1.66 million mt, all compared with the same period last year.

Meanwhile, during the given period, the Ukrainian steelmaker Zaporizhstal registered an 18.8 percent decrease in its finished steel production and a 20.2 percent decline in its crude steel production year on year, to 2.286 million mt and 2.73 million mt respectively. Zaporizhstal's agglomerate production went down by 13.9 percent year on year and its pig iron production declined by 20.1 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 4.01 million and 2.275 million.

In January-October, Dneprovsky Iron and Steel Works named after F. Dzerzhinsky increased its crude steel production by 2.2 percent year on year to 2.848 million mt and its pig iron production by 2.6 percent year on year to 2.654 million mt. Meanwhile, during the period in question, the plant also increased its output of finished steel by 17.2 percent to 2.743 million mt and upped its agglomerate production by 4.7 percent to 3.983 million mt, both compared to the same period last year.
 
Meanwhile, during the first ten months of 2009, Makeevsk MZ did not produce any crude steel or pig iron, and registered a 20 percent decrease in its finished steel output, which fell to 641,000 mt.
