Ukrainian steelmakers issue January-July output data

The major Ukrainian steelmakers have released their preliminary production results for the first seven months of 2009.

Accordingly, during the given period Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich) reduced its finished steel product output by 47.3 percent and its pipe production by 68.4 percent year on year, to 1.640 million mt and 19,700 mt respectively. Ilyich's crude steel production decreased by 44 percent, its pig iron output by 39.8 percent and its agglomerate production by 46.8 percent, year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 2.298 million, 1.939 million and 4.296 million.

During the first seven months of 2009, Azovstal decreased its crude steel output by 37.5 percent to 2.309 million mt, its pig iron production by 35.2 percent to 1.981 million mt and its finished steel production by 37 percent to 2.117 million mt, all compared to the corresponding period of 2008. Meanwhile, Azovstal's agglomerate production saw a slight decrease of 1.5 percent to 1.120 million mt, while its metallurgical coke output registered a drop of 22.6 percent to 1.111 million mt year on year.

In January-July 2009, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih produced 2.160 million mt of finished steel - down 35.5 percent, 2.820 million mt of crude steel - down 37.6 percent, 2.485 million mt of pig iron - down 38 percent, and 4.492 million mt of agglomerate - down 32.6 percent, all compared to the first seven months of 2008.

During the period in question, Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) reduced its pig iron production by 29.8 percent year on year, its crude steel production by 32.7 percent, its finished steel production by 35.2 percent, and its agglomerate production by 12.2 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 1.882 million, 2.082 million, 1.841 million and 2.531 million.

During the first seven months of this year, Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (EMZ) decreased its pig iron production by 27.8 percent to 1.206 million mt, its crude steel production by 22.6 percent to 1.368 million mt, its finished steel output by 26 percent to 1.296 million mt, and its agglomerate production by 10.3 percent to 1.1195 million mt, all compared with the same period last year.

Meanwhile, during the given period, the Ukrainian steelmaker Zaporizhstal registered a 26.5 percent decrease in its finished steel production and a 27.5 percent decline in its crude steel production year on year, to 1.584 million mt and 1.894 million mt respectively. Zaporizhstal's agglomerate production went down by 17 percent year on year and its pig iron production declined by 25.6 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 2.822 million and 1.582 million.

In January-July, Dneprovsky Iron and Steel Works named after F. Dzerzhinsky decreased its output of finished steel by 0.5 percent to 1.954 million mt, its crude steel production by 11.2 percent to 2.055 million mt, its pig iron production by 9.2 percent to 1.925 million mt, and its agglomerate production by 7.5 percent to 2.813 million mt. 

During the period in question, Makeevsk MZ did not produce any crude steel or pig iron, and registered a 42.5 percent decrease in its finished steel output to 368,000 mt.
