The major Ukrainian steelmakers have released their preliminary production results for the first ten months of 2008.

Accordingly, during the given period Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich) reduced its finished steel products output by 14.7 percent and its pipe production by 19.8 percent year on year, to 3.87 million metric tons and 89,900 metric tons respectively. Ilyich's crude steel production decreased by 11.56 percent, its pig iron output by 9.42 percent and its agglomerate production by 0.6 percent, year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were, 5.096 million, 4.07 million and 10.50 million.

During the first ten months of 2008, Azovstal decreased its crude steel output by 2.7 percent to 5.09 million metric tons, pig iron production by 5.9 percent to 4.235 million mt and its finished steel production by 0.05 percent to 4.64 million mt, all compared to the corresponding period of 2007. Meanwhile, Azovstal's agglomerate production stands at the level of last year, i.e. at 1.619 million metric tons.

In January-October 2008, mini-mill ISTIL produced 902,000 metric tons of finished steel - up 11.8 percent year on year, and 916,000 metric tons of crude steel - up 6.6 percent.

During the first ten months of 2008, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih produced 4.812 million mt of finished steel - down 18.8 percent, 5.752 million mt of crude steel - down 15.3 percent, 5.193 million mt of pig iron - down 13.9 percent, and 8.712 million mt of agglomerate - down 12.9 percent, all compared to the first ten months of 2007.

In January-October 2008, Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) increased its pig iron production by 28.6 percent, its crude steel production by 22 percent, its finished steel production by 22.4 percent but reduced its agglomerate production by 6.6 percent year on year. The respective figures in million metric tons were 3.419, 3.941, 3.557 and 3.818.

During the period in question, Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (EMZ) increased its pig iron production by 14.8 percent to 2.25 million mt, its crude steel production by 6.2 percent to 2.4 million mt, its finished steel by 4.4 percent to 2.38 million mt, while its agglomerate production decreased by 4.17 percent to 1.768 million mt, all compared with the same period last year.

During the first ten months of 2008, due to the lack of demand both in the domestic and overseas markets, Ukrainian steelmakers registered decreases in their crude steel and finished steel production by six percent for both to 33.479 million mt and 28.123 million mt respectively, compared with the data for the same period last year. Meanwhile, pipe and pig iron production both decreased year on year by five percent to 2.123 million mt and 28.037 million mt.
