Ukrainian steelmakers issue Jan-Feb 2009 output data

The major Ukrainian steelmakers have released their preliminary production results for the first two months of 2009.

Accordingly, during the given period Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich) reduced its finished steel products output by 55.1 percent and its pipe production by 67.43 percent year on year, to 402,000 mt and 4,300 mt respectively. Ilyich's crude steel production decreased by 48.66 percent, its pig iron output by 44.84 percent and its agglomerate production by 46.21 percent, year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 593,000, 502,000 and 1.198 million.

During the first two months of 2009, Azovstal decreased its crude steel output by 49.9 percent to 503,000 metric tons, its pig iron production by 48.28 percent to 434,000 mt and its finished steel production by 48.6 percent to 458,000 mt, all compared to the corresponding period of 2008. Meanwhile, Azovstal's agglomerate production saw a slight decrease of 2.47 percent to 317,000 metric tons year on year.

In January-February 2009, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih produced 679,000 mt of finished steel - down 41.17 percent, 697,000 mt of crude steel - down 44.8 percent, 630,000 mt of pig iron - down 44.2 percent, and 1.192 million mt of agglomerate - down 34.47 percent, all compared to the first two months of 2008.

During the first two months of 2009, Zaporizhstal decreased its finished steel production by 23.4 percent and its crude steel production by 22.2 percent year on year, to 452,000 mt and 557,000 mt respectively. Zaporizhstal's agglomerate production went down by 7.65 percent year on year and its pig iron production declined by 20 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 833,000 and 463,000.

During the period in question, Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) reduced its pig iron production by 22.82 percent year on year, its crude steel production by 20.55 percent, its finished steel production by 14.72 percent, and its agglomerate production by 11 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 548,000, 611,000, 574,000 and 720,000.

During the first two months of 2009, Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (EMZ) decreased its pig iron production by seven percent to 345,700 mt, its crude steel production by 7.1 percent to 402,000 mt, its finished steel output by 18 percent to 375,900 mt, and its agglomerate production by 16.96 percent to 333,000 mt, all compared with the same period last year.
