Ukraine’s ferrous metal exports in Jan-Feb 2005
Ukraine raked in nearly $2 billion from exports of ferrous metals during the first two months of 2005, a 62.3% year-on-year increase in terms of value. Volume wise, exports rose 39% year on year. In January 2005, Ukraine's ferrous metal exports increased 19.8% year on year to 2.6 million tons. Value wise, Ukraine's January exports jumped 78.4%, from $560 million in January 2004 to $1 billion in 2005. February's export numbers were similar: A dramatic year-on-year tonnage increase of 58% in February to 2.48 million tons at $955 million in value. On the other hand, the ferrous metal imports of the country through the first two months showed a significant increase of 58%, from $86.52 million last year to $136.5 million in 2005. Ferrous metal imports actually decreased in terms of volume in January 2005 due to weaker business activities on domestic market and growing sale prices. In that month, Ukraine imported 96'000 tons of ferrous metals, a 30% year on year decrease. However, skyrocketing prices for ferrous metals pushed the value of Ukraine's imports up 44% to $61.2 million. Ferrous metal imports for February 2005 reached $75.3 million, an approximately 70% year on year increase in value terms.
