Pakistan-based Tuwairqi Steel Mills Limited (TSML) has recorded the highest-ever production rate of an iron making plant in Pakistan during the plant demonstration test conducted under the expert supervision of the US-based plantmaker Midrex, according to local media sources.

During the demonstration test, the plant ran at 100 percent of its rated capacity, producing 160 mt of high quality direct reduced iron (DRI) per hour for 72 hours, achieving all of its operational targets. This development has significance considering that Pakistan's current per capita steel consumption is only 40 kilograms, compared to the global average of 215 kilograms.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, in January Tuwairqi Steel Mills commissioned the first phase of its new direct reduced iron plant with an annual capacity of 1.28 million mt.
