Turkish steel pipe exports to North Africa increase in Jan-May 2009

According to the data provided by the Istanbul Mineral and Metals Exporters' Association (IMMIB), in the January-May period of the current year Turkey's total steel pipe exports amounted to 678,000 metric tons, increasing by 0.12 percent year on year. Meanwhile, the revenue generated by these exports totaled $650 million, decreasing by 7.40 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the first five months of 2009, the amount of steel pipes exported from Turkey to the Middle East countries reached 105,290 mt, up 73.66 percent year on year, totaling a value of $76.197 million, increasing by 15.67 percent compared to the value in January-May 2008. In particular, steel pipe exports to Iraq rose by a remarkable 314 percent year on year, from 18,150 metric tons to 75,270 metric tons.

On the other hand, in the period in question Turkey's steel pipe exports to North Africa totaled 260,166 metric tons, marking a huge increase of 445.81 percent year on year, amounting to a value of $309 million, up 390 percent compared to value in the same period of the previous year. In particular, in the first five months of 2009 exports to Algeria increased by 537 percent year on year from 35,182 metric tons to 224,101 metric tons.

In January-May 2009, Turkish steel pipe exports to Europe amounted to 212,736 metric tons, decreasing by 52.51 percent year on year, totaling a value of $179 million, down 59 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
