Turkish scrap imports down 30 percent in June, may slide further

In June this year, Turkey's scrap import volume fell by 30 percent year on year to 1.28 million metric tons and was down 29.3 percent compared to May, according to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), The value of these imports totaled $403.35 million, down 38.3 percent year on year and decreasing by 31.44 percent month on month.

As for July, it is estimated that Turkey imported approximately 1.0-1.1 million mt of scrap and the country’s scrap imports are foreseen to remain below 1 million mt in August as crude steel output from electric arc furnaces follows a declining trend. In June, crude steel production from electric arc furnaces fell by 10.1 percent year on year.

In the January-June period, Turkey's scrap imports amounted to 9 million mt, down 16.4 percent, while the value of these imports decreased by 23.9 percent to $2.87 billion, both year on year,

In the given period, Turkey imported 1,624,477 mt of scrap from the US, down 18.07 percent year on year, with the US ranking as Turkey's leading scrap import source, ahead of the Netherlands which supplied 1,250,305 mt in the given period, up 3.78 year on year.
