Turkish re-roller Mescier is planning to commission its one million mt per year electric arc furnace (EAF) by the end of this year, the company’s vice president Mehmet Mescier has told the Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency.

Construction works are under progress with a $100 million investment, despite the generally unfavorable market in Turkey. With the new EAF facility, the company will be able to use its own feedstock for an expected annual output of 500,000 mt of merchant bar this year. In 2018, Mescier’s merchant bar production amounted to 400,000 mt, while the company imported approximately 500,000 mt of billet from Russia and Ukraine. In future, Mescier is expected to balance its scrap and billet purchases for more flexibility on the cost side.

With the new facility, the company also plans to increase its merchant bar exports. In 2018, Mescier exported about 350,000 mt of merchant bars to the Middle East, North Africa and South America.
