According to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in August this year Turkey's steel scrap imports fell by 31.8 percent from July, amounting to 1.5 million metric tons.
The data show that, in the given period, the average import price of Turkey's steel scrap stood at $471/mt, increasing $8/mt or 1.7 percent compared to the previous month.
Meanwhile, in the first eight months of the year Turkey's scrap imports amounted to 13.7 million mt, up 17.04 percent compared to the same period last year. In the January-August period, the US was Turkey's top scrap import source with 3.1 million mt, while Romania and Russia followed the US with 1.4 million mt and 1.2 million mt respectively.
In August, the US was Turkey's top scrap import source with 455,260 mt, down 30.4 percent, while Romania followed the US with its scrap exports to Turkey amounting to 182,921 mt, up 3.4 percent, both compared to July. In the given period, Russia exported 156,642 mt of steel scrap to Turkey, down 50 percent, the UK exported 137,736 mt to Turkey, down 30.5 percent, Belgium exported 58,147 mt to Turkey, down 58.7 percent, while Turkey imported 45,612 mt of steel scrap from the Netherlands, down 71.2 percent, and 27,947 mt from Bulgaria, down 15.7 percent - all compared to July this year.
