According to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in May this year Turkey's flat steel imports, including hot rolled, cold rolled, coated and narrow strip steel, rose by 35.4 percent compared to the previous month and were up 35.3 percent compared to May 2011, totaling 505,410 metric tons. The value of these imports amounted to $377.7 million, increasing by 36.7 percent as compared to April this year and up 14.6 percent year on year.
Meanwhile, in the first five months of the current year Turkey's flat steel imports amounted to 1.98 million metric tons, decreasing 8.6 percent compared to the corresponding period of 2011.
In the first five months of the current year, Turkey's hot rolled flat steel imports from Ukraine amounted to 471,439 metric tons, increasing by 9.7 percent year on year. Turkey's second biggest source of hot rolled flat steel imports in January-May this year was Romania with 308,879 metric tons, up 19.2 percent compared to the first five months of 2011.
