According to the information provided by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association, in 2009 Turkey's long steel production declined by 8.18 percent year on year, amounting to 20.4 million metric tons. Long steel production accounted for 80.62 percent of the country's total steel production during the year in question.
Meanwhile, during 2009, the country's flat steel output continued its rise, increasing by 14.61 percent as compared to 2008, mainly due to commissioning of new capacities by Turkey's only integrated steel producer Erdemir, and totaled 4.46 million metric tons. Flat steel production constituted 18.82 percent of total domestic steel output.
In 2009, Turkey's special steel output totaled 142,000 metric tons, decreasing by 67.36 percent year on year.
In the given period, Turkey produced 25.3 million metric tons of steel, 5.61 percent down on 2008. The production performed by electric arc furnace plants declined by 10.27 percent year on year, mainly due to lower capacity utilization rates, while steel production using blast furnaces increased by 7.5 percent compared to 2008. In 2009, 70.11 percent of production came from mini-mills, with the remaining 29.89 percent coming from integrated plants.
