Tianjin to eliminate 6.9 million mt of crude steel capacity in 2016-20

Crude steel production capacity in the northeastern Chinese city of Tianjin is to be cut by 6.9 million mt in the 2016-20 period, as announced by the Tianjin Iron and Steel Association. The decision was the outcome of a joint investigation on the issue of capacity elimination carried out by Tianjin Iron and Steel Association, Tianjin Development and Reform Commission and Tianjin Municipal Commission of Industry and Information Technology.
 
The Tianjin municipal authorities already eliminated 3.7 million mt of crude steel capacity in 2016 and plan to eliminate a further 1.8 million mt in 2017, as stated by the Tianjin Iron and Steel Association.
 
According to previous data issued by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, in the 2010-15 period Tianjin eliminated 2.1 million mt of crude steel capacity.
