According to a press release by Unite the Union, three UK unions, Community, GMB and Unite the Union have launched a joint campaign, calling for the British government to use local steel products in the investment and infrastructure projects in order to ensure economic recovery and secure jobs in the country following the coronavirus outbreak in order to support the steel industry which plays an important role for the country’s economy and will pave the way for a recovery.

The unions said that the steel industry needs demand support and warned that allowing blast furnaces to halt will likely to cause millions of pounds of loss.

The steel industry employs 32.000 people and supplies metals to other vital sectors such as automotive, engineering and construction.
