Thailand is expected to re-impose AD duties on HR sheet

According to recent news in the market, Thailand Commerce Ministry will likely resume anti-dumping duties on hot rolled steel sheet imported from Japan, South Africa, Russia, Kazakhstan, India, Korea, Taiwan, Venezuela, Argentina, Ukraine, Algeria, Indonesia, Slovakia and Romania. As previously reported by SteelOrbis, Thailand Ministry of Commerce in March 2004 rescinded the anti-dumping duty orders for a six-month period due to raw material shortage and rising prices. Accordingly, the duties would be effective in September 2004. However, Commerce Ministry announced that due to market conditions, the duties might not be restored even after September. Upon the statement of the Ministry, Thai steel producer Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI) demanded that the Ministry keep the duties in effect, claiming that the removal of the duties would hurt its business. In a recent statement, the Ministry announced that if production in the country is found sufficient and that any shortage is unlikely, the duties will be implemented again. A final decision on the issue is expected to be announced this week.
