India’s Tata Steel Limited and state-run natural gas retailer-distributor GAIL Limited have signed an agreement for the latter to supply natural gas to the former’s ferroalloy plant in Odisha aiming to reduce its carbon footprint, a Tata Steel statement said on Monday, March 6.
Under the agreement, GAIL will supply natural gas to the ferroalloy plant through its pipeline from Gujarat in the west of India, the statement said.
Furnace oil used in the ferroalloys plant emits more carbon dioxide and sulphur oxide than natural gas. Natural gas emits 27 percent less carbon dioxide and has lower levels of other pollutants and the project will lead to a greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction by 968 mt per year, the statement said.
