Indian steel giant Tata Steel has announced its production and sales figures for December 2009 as well as for Q3 of the fiscal year 2009-10, reporting a 49 percent increase in sales during Q3 compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.
According to a company press release, in December 2009 Tata registered a remarkable increase in its hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel production over the corresponding month of the previous year, with a 56 percent increase year on year in its long product sales and a 90 percent rise in its flat product sales.
In December, Tata's total steel sales increased by 73 percent to 636,000 mt, up from 368,000 mt in December 2008. In the month in question, Tata Steel's hot metal production increased by 15 percent to 651,000 mt, while its crude steel output rose 21 percent, reaching 600,000 mt, from 566,000 and 494,000 mt respectively in December 2008. In December 2009, Tata Steel's saleable steel output rose 77 percent year on year to 592,000 mt, from 334,000 mt in the same month of 2008. These are Tata's best-ever monthly production results in all three areas.
The month of December 2009 also witnessed the best-ever output results for Tata Steel's various production units, including the LD#1 unit (one of the producer's steel melting shops) and the hot strip mill.
With regard to Q3 of fiscal year 2009-10, Tata has announced that its total steel sales increased by 49 percent to 1,597,000 mt, up from 1,071,000 mt compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year. During the period in question, Tata Steel's hot metal production increased by 11 percent to 1,888,000 metric tons, while its crude steel output rose by 15 percent, reaching 1,725,000 mt, from 1,699,000 and 1,497,000 mt respectively in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. In Q3 of the current fiscal year, Tata Steel's saleable steel output rose 37 percent year on year to 1,688,000 mt, from 1,235,000 mt in the same period of the last fiscal year.
