The government of China’s Jiangsu Province has announced the details of the transformation and upgrading of the steel industry in the province aiming at optimizing the structure of the industry, stating that all steel smelting capacity located within 10 km of Lake Taihu will be eliminated or relocated by 2020. In principle, smelting capacities within 20 km of Taihu Lake are also to be relocated, the provincial government added.

At the same time, the number of steel enterprises in the province will be reduced from 45 to 20, with the capacity of the top five steelmakers to account for 70 percent of all crude steel capacity in the province.

In 2018, Jiangsu Province’s crude steel capacity amounted to around 100 million mt.
