Tian Weiyong, director of the environmental supervision bureau of China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment, has stated that the steel industry will remain the focus of efforts to prevent and control pollution in the 28 cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Mr. Tian indicated that, according to the monitored data, the sulfur dioxide discharged by steel enterprises - which made up 10 percent of all enterprises monitored - accounted for one third of all sulfur dioxide discharged by all the enterprises. He said this is why the steel industry in the region will be strictly monitored in efforts to prevent pollution.
