The South African National Treasury has called for public comments regarding the export tax proposal on scrap metal including ferrous scrap and stainless steel scrap. This proposal follows the recommendations made by the International Trade Administration Commission.

The export tax rate proposed for ferrous and stainless steel scrap stands at ZAR 1,000/mt ($59.9/mt).

The deadline for comments is April 9, 2020. After the discussions with stakeholders until the end of April, the proposed provisions on the export taxes on scrap metal will be developed for inclusion in the Taxation Laws Amendment, which will be published in mid-July 2020 for public comment.
