Germany-based plantmaker SMS Group has announced that it has successfully completed the modernization of Indian steelmaker Visakhapatnam Steel Plant’s (Vizag Steel) converter shop No. 1 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The modernization will help to increase annual steel production from 3.0 million mt to 3.5 million mt, while achieving highly-effective environmental protection.
SMS stated that, in the context of the modernization project, the primary dedusting system has been upgraded, and the three converters in the converter shop have been provided with new secondary dedusting systems. The gas cleaning system is designed as a wet dust-collection facility with a venturi scrubber. Following the revamp and modernization of the environmental facilities, the plant is now able to meet Vizag Steel’s high requirements in this respect.
In addition, SMS has also built another converter shop for Vizag Steel at the same location. Converter shop No. 2 is designed to produce 2.8 million mt of liquid steel annually.
